WHO Regional Office for Europe


The WHO Regional Office for Europe has a long history of action on alcohol, being the first regional office to address the problem. At a political level the first European Alcohol Action Plan was endorsed by the Member States in 1992, complemented by the European Charter on Alcohol in 1995 and updated in 2000. In 2006, the Member States endorsed the Framework for alcohol policy in the European Region, which provides a frame for implementing the European Alcohol Action Plan and in September 2011 a new European Action Plan to reduce the harmful use of alcohol 2012- 2020 was adopted by the Regional Committee.

Alcohol & Society is a nationwide NGO, independent of party politics, religion and business interests.
Alcohol & Society fights for the rights listed in the WHO European Charter on Alcohol from 1995.

The Danish EU-Presidency – represented by The National Board of Health
The National Board of Health is the supreme professional health care authority in Denmark. It assists and advices the Ministry of Health as well as other authorities with the administration of health care services, and it informs Danish citizens on specific health issues. It has the task to set the best possible frames within the health care system for the prevention and treatment of illness, suffering and functional limitations for the individual.
